Fareham
Skip as a base unless you have a reason to be here: Fareham is a half-day town between Portsmouth and Southampton, best done as a stop, not a stay.
Fareham sits roughly halfway between Portsmouth and Southampton on the M27 and the West Coastway rail line, and most of what a visitor wants — Portchester Castle, Fort Nelson, Titchfield Abbey — is on its edges rather than in the centre. The town itself is a compact market centre with a Georgian High Street, a pedestrianised West Street and a small shopping core. Treat it as a half-day or a single night if you are already moving along the south coast.

Get around
The centre is walkable and mostly flat. First Hampshire & Dorset runs nearly all local buses, with the main bus station next to the Market Quay development. Fareham railway station is on the West Coastway line with regular services to Portsmouth, Southampton, Cardiff and London. The M27 skirts the north of the town and the A27 runs east–west through the centre. Cycle routes exist but are not well linked.
