Farah
Skip Farah unless you have a specific reason to go: the citadel is the only sight and the town is a 1–2 hour stop on a Herat–Kandahar road trip.
Farah is a small provincial capital in western Afghanistan with one major historic site, the Citadel of Farah. The town has basic services and a few shops, but no other attractions. Most travellers pass through on the road between Herat and Kandahar. A single hour at the citadel is enough; you do not need to stay overnight.

- Security situation is volatile; read your government's travel advice before any trip.
- No ATMs or card payments; bring enough cash (AFN or USD).
- Guesthouses may not appear on booking sites; arrange accommodation through a local contact or ask at the bazaar.
Farah is in a region with ongoing conflict and a high risk of kidnapping, armed robbery and roadside bombs. Do not travel here without professional security advice and a local guide. The Taliban controls the area; Western governments advise against all travel to Afghanistan.
