Fairbourne
Go for one night, not a week: the beach, the narrow-gauge steam railway and the Mawddach Trail fill a day; Barmouth is a 20-min walk over the bridge.
Fairbourne is a small Gwynedd coast village of about 1,000 people on the south side of the Mawddach estuary, 9 miles from Dolgellau on the A493. It has a long sandy beach, a 2-mile narrow-gauge steam railway and the start of the Mawddach Trail, and it links to Barmouth by a foot-and-rail bridge. It works as one quiet night or a low-key base for the estuary, not as a destination in itself.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Handshake at first meeting; 'hi' and first names quickly; avoid: Cheek kisses with strangers
- Conversation: Weather is a safe opener; understatement and self-deprecating humour; avoid: Asking about salary or class
- Queues: Join at the back; avoid: Pushing onto buses or trains before others get off
- Apologies: 'Sorry' is said constantly, even when not at fault; avoid: Taking it as an admission of blame
- Pubs: Buy rounds in a group; wait at the bar without waving money; avoid: Clicking fingers at staff
- Nations: Call Scots Scottish and Welsh Welsh; avoid: Calling the whole UK 'England'
Scams and watch-outs
- Beach access crosses boulders in places: hard going with a pushchair or for anyone with poor mobility.
- Cambrian Coast trains run about every two hours each way: check the last service before you set out.
- The tide covers the estuary flats fast; do not walk out on the sand beyond the marked edge.
- Many cafés and the chippy close by early evening and shut out of season: eat before 19:00 or drive to Barmouth.
A quiet, low-crime village; the real risks are the tide on the estuary flats, loose boulders at the beach access points and a two-hourly train that strands you if you miss the last one.
