Scams and watch-outs

- Aurora viewing needs clear skies, dark hours and patience; September–March is the window, and no operator can promise a sighting.
- Summer daylight runs almost around the clock in June, so bring an eye mask and expect to sleep badly for the first night.
- Distances are long and fuel stops are sparse outside town: fill up before any drive to Chena Hot Springs or the Arctic Circle.
- Wildlife on the roads (moose, and bears on back roads) is a real hazard at dawn and dusk.
Fairbanks is a low-crime town and the main risks are environmental: extreme winter cold, ice on the roads, moose at dusk and long distances with no phone signal. In winter, dress in layers, keep a full tank and never walk far from the car unprepared.
