Exmouth is a small service town on North West Cape, 1,270 km north of Perth, and the gateway to Ningaloo Reef and Cape Range National Park. The reef starts a few hundred metres off the beach here, so you sleep in town and drive out daily. There is no public transport, no ride-hailing and one road in and out; a pre-booked car is the difference between a good trip and a stranded one. Peak season runs mid-November to mid-March for the reef, with whale sharks April to June and humpbacks in autumn and spring.
