Évora
Give Évora one night, two at most: the walled centre is walkable in half a day, and the Roman temple, chapel of bones and Alentejo food are the whole point.
Évora is a walled museum-city in the Alto Alentejo, 1 h 30 min by train or bus from Lisbon and a UNESCO World Heritage site since 1986. Its centre is small and flat enough to cross on foot in 20 minutes, so one night covers the Roman temple, the cathedral and the Chapel of Bones without rushing. Two nights add the Almendres cromlech and a slower meal. It is one of Portugal's hottest cities in summer, so spring and autumn are the working seasons.

Get around
Walk. The historic centre is compact and mostly flat, and the main sights sit within 15 minutes of each other. Two minibus routes (Trevo – Linha Azul) loop the centre at about 15-minute intervals if you need them. Taxis run 24 h and can be hailed or called. A car only helps for the cromlech and dolmen outside town.

- Everything on foot; book early in high season, rooms are few and small.

- Quietest historic pocket, 5 min walk to the cathedral; pousada and boutique rooms.
- Outside the walls (Avenida Túlio Espanca, Quinta da Tapada)
- Chain hotels with parking and pools, 15–20 min walk to the centre; better for drivers.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Two kisses on the cheek socially; handshake in business; avoid: Hugging strangers
- Language: Start with 'bom dia' or 'boa tarde'; avoid: Assuming Spanish will do
- Queues: Wait your turn; take a ticket at pharmacies and post offices; avoid: Pushing onto trams
- Titles: Use 'senhor' and 'senhora' and professional titles ('Doutor'); avoid: First names with older people until invited
- Meals: Relax — service is unhurried; avoid: Asking for Spanish-style tapas late at night in small towns
Scams and watch-outs
- Summer heat: Évora is one of Portugal's hottest cities; carry water and avoid 14:00–16:00 sun in July–August.
- Many shops and some restaurants close 13:00–15:00; plan lunch before or after.
- Chapel of Bones and cathedral roof have separate tickets and short opening windows: check before you go.
- The cromlech and dolmen are down unpaved roads with no shade and no facilities: go early, take water.
Évora is a small, low-crime city and the centre is safe on foot at night. The real risks are summer heat, uneven cobbles, and pickpockets around Praça do Giraldo in high season.
