Everglades City
Half a day to one night: airboat tour, Museum of the Everglades, and a walk along the Barron River. Not a base for the national park — that's Everglades National Park's Gulf Coast Visitor Center.
Everglades City is a small, quiet town on the edge of the Ten Thousand Islands, the western gateway to Everglades National Park. Most visitors come for an airboat ride or a ranger-led boat tour, then move on. One night is enough to eat stone crab, walk the boardwalk and catch a sunset over the mangroves.
