Evanston, Wyoming
Evanston
One night on an I-80 crossing, or a half-day stop for the roundhouse and Bear River State Park. Not a destination on its own.
Evanston sits on I-80 four miles from the Utah line, 88 miles from Salt Lake City airport, and grew as a Union Pacific railroad town. The draw is the 1912 roundhouse and railyard tours, Bear River State Park next to the interstate, and cheap beds between Salt Lake City and Rock Springs. Two nights is plenty; most travellers pass through in an afternoon.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Handshake and 'hi, how are you?' — reply 'good, thanks'; avoid: Treating the question as a real health enquiry
- Restaurants: Tip 18–22% and wait for the check; avoid: Leaving without tipping
- Personal space: Keep an arm's length in queues; avoid: Standing close to strangers
- Politics and religion: Listen more than you speak; avoid: Opening with hot-button topics
- Smoking: Smoke only in marked areas; avoid: Smoking near doors or in parks where banned
Scams and watch-outs
- Winter storms close or slow I-80 between Evanston and Salt Lake City: check WYDOT road conditions before you drive.
- Distances between towns here are long and cell coverage drops on the Mirror Lake Scenic Byway: carry water and a full tank.
- Roundhouse and railyard tours are by appointment through the city website, not walk-up: book before you arrive.
- Altitude is about 2,060 m (6,750 ft): pace the first day if you came from sea level.
A small, quiet town and generally safe for visitors. The real risks are winter driving on I-80, long empty distances, and altitude on your first day.
