Eureka
Eureka, California
Give Eureka 2 nights as a Redwood Coast base: Old Town on foot, one full day for redwoods, one for the bay and Samoa. Skip it as a day trip from the Bay Area.
Eureka is the largest coastal city between San Francisco and Portland and the practical base for the Redwood Coast: Humboldt Bay, Victorian Old Town, and the world's tallest trees within an hour's drive. It is a working town, not a resort, and it rains a lot. Two nights covers the city and one redwood day; three nights adds the Lost Coast or a slow drive south on the Avenue of the Giants.

Get around
Old Town and the waterfront are walkable; everything else needs a car. Eureka Transit Service (ETS) runs local buses and Redwood Transit System links Arcata and nearby towns, but frequencies are low. US-101 runs through downtown as one-way 4th (south) and 5th (north) streets. Rental cars are available in town and at ACV.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Handshake and 'hi, how are you?' — reply 'good, thanks'; avoid: Treating the question as a real health enquiry
- Restaurants: Tip 18–22% and wait for the check; avoid: Leaving without tipping
- Personal space: Keep an arm's length in queues; avoid: Standing close to strangers
- Politics and religion: Listen more than you speak; avoid: Opening with hot-button topics
- Smoking: Smoke only in marked areas; avoid: Smoking near doors or in parks where banned
Scams and watch-outs
- Rain: Nov–Mar can be wet for days; pack a real rain shell and waterproof shoes.
- Rural Humboldt County grows much of the US cannabis crop; some grows are guarded. Stay out of unmarked rural properties and don't wander off roads.
- Cell signal is patchy or absent in redwood parks and on the Lost Coast; download offline maps before you drive.
- The Lost Coast Trail is a rugged 24-mile wilderness hike with tide-dependent sections — not a beach stroll.
- Coastal water is cold year-round (about 12–14 °C); sneaker waves and strong currents make swimming dangerous.
Eureka is a small city with ordinary street-smart risks: keep to lit streets in Old Town at night, don't leave anything visible in a parked car, and treat the rural county and redwood parks as remote — no signal, cold water, fast weather changes.
