Estepona
Base here 2–3 nights if you want a Costa del Sol beach town with a real old town; skip it if you want nightlife or a car-free rail arrival.
Estepona is a working Andalusian town of about 67,000 people that kept its old centre while the coast around it filled with resorts. The old town is compact and walkable, the beach runs unbroken for 21 km, and the Sierra Bermeja rises behind it. It has no train station, so you arrive by bus or car, and most people use it as a relaxed base between Málaga and Gibraltar rather than a sightseeing stop.

Get around
The centre is small enough to walk: old town, port and beach are within 15–20 minutes on foot. Three local bus routes cover the town and the urbanisations, roughly every 30 minutes on routes 1 and 2, with route 3 running a few times a day. For the New Golden Mile and outlying hotels, a car or taxi is the practical option.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Two kisses on the cheek (right then left) between friends and when introduced socially; handshake in business; avoid: Being stiff — Spaniards stand close and touch arms
- Meal times: Late lunch and dinner; long sobremesa (chat after eating); avoid: Rushing to leave or asking for the bill with the last bite
- Noise: Join in the lively conversation; avoid: Reading loud voices as anger
- Siesta hours: Keep noise down in residential buildings 15:00–17:00 and after 23:00; avoid: Phone calls to people at lunch time
- Dress: Smart casual in cities; locals rarely wear shorts in Madrid in town; avoid: Swimwear or bare torsos away from the beach
- Regional pride: Ask about local dishes and festivals; avoid: Assuming Catalan or Basque are dialects of Spanish
Scams and watch-outs
- No train station: the nearest rail link is Algeciras, so plan on bus or car.
- The A-7 is often the only road between coastal towns and jams most days in summer.
- The AP-7 is a toll road; the A-7 is free.
- Beach bars and some old-town places may not post prices: ask before ordering.
- Summer heat and strong midday sun; the Sierra Bermeja can be much cooler and cloudier than the coast.
Estepona is a low-risk beach town; the real issues are summer heat, traffic on the A-7 and beach or bar bills that are not posted. Keep valuables off the sand and use hotel safes.
