Esperance
Give Esperance 3 nights: one day for Cape Le Grand and Lucky Bay, one for the Twilight Beach coast road, one for town and the museum.
Esperance is a small port town on Western Australia's south coast, 720 km and about 7 hours' drive from Perth, with white-sand beaches and granite headlands that most visitors rate above the town itself. The reason to come is Cape Le Grand National Park, 50 km east, and the coast road west to Twilight Beach. Three nights covers both without rushing; two nights works if you skip the town sights.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Handshake or 'G'day' / 'How are you going?'; first names from the start; avoid: Formal titles; long answers to 'how are you'
- Rounds: Buy your round ('shout') when drinking in a group; avoid: Leaving before your shout
- Queues: Queue patiently; sitting in the front seat of a taxi when alone is common; avoid: Pushing in — it is noticed
- Country: Listen to Welcomes and Acknowledgements; use local place names when offered; avoid: Touching artefacts or photographing ceremonies without permission
- Beach: Swim between the flags; respect lifesavers' instructions; avoid: Swimming at unpatrolled beaches alone
- Humour: Expect teasing and understatement; laugh along; avoid: Taking dry sarcasm literally or boasting
- Walking and driving: Keep left on footpaths and escalators; wave thanks to drivers who let you in; avoid: Stopping on the road to photograph kangaroos
Scams and watch-outs
- Beaches are unpatrolled: swim between the flags where they exist, and never turn your back on the Southern Ocean swell.
- Summer can push past 31 °C when northerly winds come off the interior; carry water on any coastal walk.
- Fuel and food gaps: fill up in town before heading east to Cape Le Grand or west along the coast road.
- Kangaroos on the roads at dawn and dusk, especially near the national park.
A small, low-crime town; the real risks are ocean and road. Beaches are unpatrolled, the swell is real, and kangaroos cross the coastal roads at dawn and dusk.
