Stay 1 night only if you want a cheap bed between Santa Fe and Taos; otherwise pass through and sleep in Santa Fe or Taos.
Española is a working town of about 10,500 people midway between Santa Fe (30 km south) and Taos, with two Pueblo neighbours, a lowrider reputation and almost no pedestrian centre. Its value is as a cheap staging point: beds cost less than Santa Fe, and the Puye Cliff Dwellings, Santa Clara Pueblo pottery and the High Road to Taos all start within a 20-minute drive. Come for one night, or skip it and day-trip from Santa Fe.

Get around
A car is effectively required: the town is spread along US 84/285 and not walkable. New Mexico Park and Ride runs weekday buses to Santa Fe and Los Alamos, and NCRTD covers regional villages on weekdays, with the Taos Express on weekends. No commercial flights serve the town airport.
