Escondido is an inland city in North County San Diego, 30 mi (48 km) north of San Diego on I-15 and 20 mi (32 km) east of Oceanside on Route 78. It is a practical, car-first base: the San Diego Zoo Safari Park sits a few miles east, the Sprinter light rail links to the coast, and downtown has a small walkable core of restaurants, a gelato shop and a brewery. Most travellers use it for one night or as a cheaper alternative to coastal Carlsbad and Del Mar.
