Escárcega
Skip as a destination: use Escárcega as a 1-night transfer between the Tren Maya and the Chetumal–Villahermosa buses, then leave.
Escárcega is a highway and rail junction of about 31,000 people in inland Campeche, where Federal highways 186 and 261 meet and all three Tren Maya lines converge. There is nothing here to sightsee. Its only value is logistics: a clean bus terminal, a full-service Tren Maya station and cheap beds for one night between Campeche, Palenque, Chetumal and the Río Bec ruins.

Get around
The centre is small enough to walk or cycle. Taxis wait at the main plaza, the bus terminal and the Tren Maya station, and hotel staff can call a radio taxi. For nearby towns use combis from the Terminal de Combis on the Villahermosa–Chetumal highway; they run along the highway and can often be flagged down between marked stops. Cash only.

Sleep
- Centro / main plaza
- Walkable to the bus terminal and the combi stop on the highway; cheapest beds and the noisiest street rooms.
- Around the Tren Maya station (Concordia)
- Best if you have an early train; a taxi ride from the centre, little food nearby.
- Highway 186 edge (Unidad Esfuerzo y Trabajo)
- Roadside hotels with parking and on-site restaurants; good for drivers, dull on foot.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Handshake; a kiss on the right cheek among friends; avoid: Skipping 'buenos días' when entering a shop
- Punctuality: Be on time for tours and buses; avoid: Expecting social events to start on time
- Talking: Warm small talk, family, food, football; avoid: Jokes about cartels, the wall or migration
- Churches: Covered shoulders, quiet; avoid: Photos during mass
- Dining: Say 'provecho' to other diners when leaving; avoid: Rushing the waiter
Scams and watch-outs
- This is a transit town, not a sight: do not build an itinerary around it.
- Book Tren Maya seats ahead — some legs run only a few trains a day and the station is away from the centre.
- Prefer daytime buses; night buses on some southern routes have been robbed.
- Summer heat and humidity are severe; carry water.
- Some cheap hotels have no air conditioning — confirm before paying.
Escárcega is a working transit town and generally calm by day; the real risks are highway driving at night, unlit streets away from the centre, and cheap hotels with no air conditioning in the hot months.
