Esbjerg
Give Esbjerg one night, or half a day if you are passing: the harbour sculpture, the maritime museum and a 10-minute ferry to Fanø are the whole case.
Esbjerg is Denmark's fifth-largest city and its North Sea harbour town, built from nothing in 1868 and still run by offshore energy, shipping and fishing. The centre is small and walkable, the big sights sit on the coast edge, and the ferry to Fanø leaves from the harbour. Most travellers use it as a base for the Wadden Sea coast rather than a destination in itself.

Get around
The centre is compact and walkable: station, shopping streets, harbour and the Men at Sea sculpture are all within about 25 minutes on foot. Use Sydtrafik buses for Hjerting, the airport and the northern malls. Trains run to Copenhagen via Kolding and Odense, to Aarhus via Fredericia, and south to Ribe and Tønder. The only passenger ferry left is the 10-minute crossing to Fanø.

- The beach at Hjerting and Fanø has soft sand and strong currents in places: swim near other people.
