Erding
Come for one night if you want Therme Erding or a cheap bed near Munich Airport; skip the town itself otherwise.
Erding is a 36,000-person town 10 km south of Munich Airport, with two reasons to stop: Therme Erding, Europe's largest sauna and spa complex, and the Erdinger Weissbraeu brewery tour. The old centre is small and walkable, the S2 S-Bahn reaches Munich in about 50 minutes, and most travellers use it as an airport-adjacent base rather than a destination.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Firm handshake with eye contact; 'Guten Tag' or 'Hallo'; avoid: Hugs with people you have just met
- Names: Herr / Frau plus surname until invited to use first names; avoid: Using 'du' with officials or older strangers
- Punctuality: Arrive on time for tours, dinners and appointments; avoid: Being more than 5–10 minutes late without a message
- Queues and rules: Follow signs, wait at red lights, sort rubbish; avoid: Walking in cycle lanes
- Conversation: Direct and factual; people say what they mean; avoid: Taking directness as rudeness, or joking about the Nazi era
- Home visit: Bring flowers (odd number, not red roses) or wine; shoes off if the hosts do; avoid: Arriving early
- Paying: Say the total including tip as you pay; avoid: Leaving coins on the table and walking off
Scams and watch-outs
- Therme Erding sauna area is nude-only and has its own rules; read them before booking.
- Brewery tours sell out in German school-holiday weeks: book ahead.
- Some traditional restaurants take no cards; carry cash.
- Late S2 trains thin out; check the last connection back from Munich.
Erding is a low-crime small town and feels safe day and night; the practical risks are winter ice on pavements, cycling traffic, and cash-only restaurants.
