Erbil is the practical way to see Iraq: the Kurdistan Region is calmer and easier for independent travel than federal Iraq, most nationalities get a visa on arrival at Erbil airport, and two nights covers the citadel and bazaar.

Erbil is the capital of the Kurdistan Region of Iraq and one of the country's largest cities. The Citadel, a mound continuously inhabited for thousands of years and a UNESCO World Heritage site, sits above the Qaysari Bazaar and a modern centre of malls and parks. It runs its own international airport and, for most nationalities, its own on-arrival visa, separate from federal Iraq.

About 10 km from the centre; taxis and hotel transfers run without the checkpoint delays common in federal Iraq.

Get around

The citadel and bazaar area is entirely walkable. Taxis (metered or agreed in advance) and ride-hailing apps cover the rest of the city; for day trips beyond Erbil, hire a car with a driver.

  • Kurdistan Region entry is separate from the rest of Iraq — the on-arrival visa at Erbil airport does not automatically cover travel to Baghdad or the south.
  • Summer heat above 40°C makes midday sightseeing uncomfortable; plan around early morning and evening.
  • Carry your passport; checkpoints on roads leaving the city are routine.
