Base in London and ride the Central line out for one day: forest walk plus High Street, 40 min each way, no hotel needed.
Epping is a market town at the eastern end of the Central line, in London fare Zone 6, wrapped by Epping Forest on its north and south sides. The town centre is small: one High Street of shops, cafés and pubs, a Monday market running since a 1253 charter, and a tube station with the largest car park on the Underground. Almost everything worth doing here is a walk or a short bus ride into the forest or to a heritage railway, so one full day covers it and a night is only worth it if you want an early start on the trails.

Get around
The town centre is walkable in 10–15 min, but the tube station sits at the bottom of a steep hill. Forest trails and bridleways start from the town edges and from Theydon Bois station. Buses 13, 418 and 420 call at the tube station for Waltham Cross, Loughton, Harlow and Ongar. A car helps for North Weald, Copped Hall and Hill Hall.
