Enugu
Give Enugu 2 nights as a calm South East base: Udi Hills viewpoint, Ogbete market and okpa, then fly or bus out. Skip if you only have Lagos and Abuja time.
Enugu is the capital of Enugu State and the city Igbo Nigeria calls the Coal City, built on coal found on the plateau in 1909 and grown by the railway from Port Harcourt in 1916. It sits at the foot of the Udi Plateau, so the air is cooler than the coast and the hills give you the best views. It is a working Nigerian city, not a resort: come for the food, the markets, the colonial-era streets of GRA and the festivals, and treat the sights as a half-day each.

Get around
Taxis and buses do the work; there is no metro. Registered taxis are yellow, unregistered ones are called kabu kabu — agree the fare before you get in, since meters are rare. Coal City Cabs runs registered Nissan and Suzuki taxis, and Coal City Shuttle buses cover the urban routes. Long-distance buses leave from Ogbete Motor Park, with Garki Motor Park as a second pickup point. Distances inside the city are short but traffic and unpaved side roads slow everything down; budget 20–40 min for most cross-city hops.
See and do
Known for
- Coal City history and the former Onyeama and Okpara mines
- Okpa Enugu (Bambara nut flour)

Sleep
- Independence Layout
- The hotel belt: most mid-range and business hotels, restaurants and easy taxi pickups. Best first choice.
- GRA (Government Reserved Area)
- Quiet colonial-era streets, golf course and cafés; good for a calmer stay, still 10–15 min from the centre.
- New Haven
- Residential and student-leaning, cheaper guest houses and local kitchens; fewer sights on foot.
- Abakpa Nike
- East side near Nike Lake Resort; only worth it if you want the lake and a resort-style stay.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Greet with a handshake and a question about family; Yoruba juniors may bow or kneel to elders; avoid: Rushing to business
- Titles: Use Sir, Ma, Chief, Alhaji; avoid: First names with older people
- Hands: Right hand to give, receive and eat; avoid: The left hand for money or food
- Dress: Smart clothes for churches, offices and events; modest dress in the north; avoid: Shorts in the north
- Hospitality: Accept food or drink offered; avoid: Flat refusals
- Photos: Ask first; avoid: Police, soldiers, airports, government buildings
Scams and watch-outs
- Check your government's travel advice for Enugu State before booking; the state is calmer than Lagos or Abuja but night travel and isolated roads are the real risk.
- Do not walk after dark outside your hotel area; use a hotel-arranged or app taxi and share the plate number.
- Roads flood fast in the June–September rains; keep airport and intercity transfers off tight same-day connections.
- Power cuts are normal — confirm a hotel has a generator and inverter before you pay.
- Mobile data is patchy away from the centre; carry two SIMs from different networks.
Enugu State is generally calmer than Lagos or Abuja, but check your government's state-by-state advice first. The practical risks are night travel, isolated roads and unregistered kabu kabu taxis: agree the fare, share your route, and stay in after dark.
