Entebbe

Entebbe is the easy end of a Uganda trip: sleep here on the first and last night, do the botanical gardens and the wildlife centre in the morning, keep the afternoon for the lake — and leave Kampala traffic out of any day that ends at the airport.

Entebbe sits on a peninsula in Lake Victoria, a few minutes from the airport and 40 km (1 to 3 hours in traffic) from Kampala. The town is quiet, green and spread out: pavements are thin, distances need a car or a boda-boda, and the rain arrives in the afternoon in the wet months. Four clusters cover a first or last visit; the gorilla and safari legs of the trip start from the airport, not from here.

Entebbe International Airport (EBB)
EBB to Entebbe town: one pre-booked hotel pickup or airport taxi, 10–35 minutes — the risk is a late flight with no ride arranged, not the distance.

Get around

Walk inside a cluster by day; a hotel car or taxi between clusters and after dark; a boda-boda only with a helmet.

Passes
No pass. Agree the fare before you get in, or use the hotel's car.
Late at night
No rail. Taxis are few after dark: ask the hotel to book the ride back before you go out.

Language

English is the official language and widely spoken by anyone who went to school. Swahili is also official and useful with police and in the east; around Kampala, Luganda is the daily language. Over 40 local languages are spoken.

  • WhatsApp is standard for operators and drivers.

Etiquette, safety and scams

Etiquette

  • Greeting: Long greetings with a handshake; ask after family; avoid: Jumping into business
  • Elders: Show deference; use 'sebo' and 'nnyabo'; avoid: First names with elders
  • Hands: Right hand or both hands to give and receive; avoid: Left hand
  • Dress: Modest in towns and villages; avoid: Shorts and vests in churches or mosques
  • Photos: Ask first; pay agreed community fees; avoid: Photographing officials or soldiers
  • Affection: Keep it private; avoid: Public displays, especially same-sex

Red lines

  • Do not photograph the State House, the airport, police, soldiers or government buildings.
  • Ask before photographing people; do not feed or touch the animals at the wildlife centre.

Scams (Uganda page)

  • Fake or resold gorilla permits: Book through a licensed operator with UWA-issued permit details in your name.
  • Fake e-visa sites: Only visas.immigration.go.ug.
  • Street money changers: Use forex bureaux and banks.
  • Boda-boda overcharging: Use SafeBoda or agree the fare first.
  • Orphanage and 'volunteer' tourism: Do not visit orphanages; donate to vetted NGOs.
