Enshi
恩施
Give Enshi 3 nights: one full day for the Grand Canyon, one for Daughter Town and the Tusi city, one spare for weather. Skip it if you only have two days in Hubei.
Enshi is a small mountain city in southwest Hubei, the gateway to the Enshi Grand Canyon and the karst country around it. The city itself is a half-day: a Tujia culture town, a rebuilt Tusi palace and a free museum. The reason to come is the canyon, 49 km out, which needs a full day and clear weather. Most travellers arrive by high-speed rail from Wuhan or Chongqing and stay 2–3 nights.

Scams and watch-outs
- The Grand Canyon is 49 km from the city and the two halves (Qixingzhai and Yunlong Gorge) are far apart: plan transport before you go, not on arrival.
- Summer rain is heavy and canyon paths can close after storms; keep a spare day.
- Scenic-area tickets and shuttle or cable-car fees are separate; confirm the total at the gate.
- English is limited outside hotels; have place names written in Chinese.
- Card and mobile payment work in the city, but small vendors and rural stalls may want cash.
Enshi is a low-crime city and walking the centre at night is normal. The real risks are mountain roads, wet canyon steps and summer storms: wear grippy shoes, avoid cliff edges in rain, and don't hike alone in the outlying valleys.
