Ensenada

Give Ensenada 2 nights: 1 day for the port and fish tacos, 1 for Valle de Guadalupe. Skip it as a beach base — the city sits on a working harbour.

Ensenada is Baja California's deep-water port, a cruise call and the gateway to Mexico's biggest wine country. The town itself is a two-hour walk: fish tacos at the pier, a fish market, a science museum and a blowhole 30 km south. Most travellers come for one night off a ship or a weekend from San Diego, then push on to Valle de Guadalupe or south down Highway 1.

Get around

Downtown is walkable. Radio taxis cover the rest; route buses are cheap but not aimed at visitors. A rental car is the practical choice for La Bufadora, the beaches and Valle de Guadalupe — and gives you a designated driver for wine days.

  • The city sits on the harbour: for a swimming beach you drive north or south.
  • Highway 1 south of town is two lanes with no shoulder; drive it in daylight only.
  • Bikes are not allowed on the toll road (1D); the free road has heavy, fast traffic.
  • Cruise-day crowds fill Calle Primera and La Bufadora; go early or on a non-ship day.
  • Check the US State Department and UK FCDO advisories for Baja California before you drive at night.

Ensenada is a working port and cruise call, and the tourist core is busy and well-policed. The real risks are driving Highway 1 at night, unlicensed taxis, and drinking in bars with no posted prices — agree the fare or the total first.
