Enschede
Give Enschede one night, two at most: it is a modern, rebuilt city with a strong museum pair, not a historic showpiece. Come for Roombeek, the Rijksmuseum Twenthe and the Oude Markt.
Enschede is the largest city in Twente and in Overijssel, a former textile centre on the German border that has been rebuilt more than once — most recently after the 2000 fireworks disaster that destroyed the Roombeek district. It has little old-town fabric, but it does have contemporary architecture, two good museums, a student nightlife and a market square that pulls shoppers from across the border. One full day covers the centre and Roombeek; a second day is for the university campus, the Rutbeek lake or a hop into Germany.

Get around
The centre is closed to cars and is small enough to walk. Buses do not take cash — pay by debit or credit card, or use the OV-chipkaart. Bikes are the local default; rental shops are in the centre. Trains from Enschede station run to Hengelo, Zwolle, Amsterdam Schiphol and into Germany.
