Engels
Skip Engels unless you are a space-history enthusiast: the Yuri Gagarin landing site is the only reason to go, and it's a 30-minute taxi ride from the city. A half-day trip from Saratov is enough.
Engels, across the Volga from Saratov, was the capital of the Volga German Republic until 1941. Today it is a quiet industrial city with one major draw: the monument at the landing site of Vostok 1, where Yuri Gagarin returned to Earth in 1961. The city itself has little else for a tourist, and most visitors come from Saratov for a few hours.
