Ende is Flores' biggest town and its mid-island transport hinge: the airport sits 10 minutes' walk from the budget hotels, buses run west to Bajawa and east to Maumere, and Kelimutu's crater lakes are 60 km up the mountain. Central Ende is small enough to cover on foot, so most travellers use it for one night before or after a Kelimutu sunrise rather than as a base.

Get around
Central Ende is walkable — the Bung Karno house, the market and the waterfront are all within about 20 minutes on foot. For anything further, flag an ojek (motorbike taxi) or a bemo; agree the fare before you get on. Kelimutu needs a car or motorbike, usually arranged through your guesthouse.

Scams and watch-outs
- Kelimutu sunrise trips leave around 04:00; the summit is cold and often cloud-covered — bring a jacket and don't count on a clear view.
- Pelni ferries to Kupang and Sumba run on a roughly two-week cycle and are frequently delayed or cancelled: confirm at the port office, not online.
- Buses from Maumere stop at a terminal about 9 km outside town; most continue to Bajawa and can drop you near the airport instead.
- Some bars and karaoke places around town are not family venues; ask about the place before you go in.
- The beach next to the market is dirty; walk further out for the clean black-sand stretches.
Ende is a low-crime provincial town and the main risks are practical: mountain roads in the dark, cold and cloud at Kelimutu, and ferry schedules that change without notice. Use a helmet on a scooter, don't swim alone at unpatrolled black-sand beaches, and drink bottled or filtered water.
