Encinitas is a small beach town on the north San Diego County coast, about 40 km north of downtown San Diego. Coast Highway 101 runs through the middle with most restaurants, shops and the beach within walking distance. It works as a relaxed 2-night base, or a day trip from Carlsbad or Del Mar. A car helps for the botanic garden and lagoon, but the Coaster rail line reaches San Diego and Oceanside without one.

Get around
Most of the centre is walkable along Coast Highway 101. The NCTD Coaster rail line stops at Encinitas station (25 E D St) and links San Diego and Oceanside; NCTD buses cover the rest. Bikes can be rented. A car is useful for San Diego Botanic Garden and San Elijo Lagoon.
