Empuriabrava
Go for 2 nights if you want a boat, a beach and a skydive; skip it if you want an old town, walkable streets or a winter trip.
Empuriabrava is a marina resort in the Gulf of Roses, about 120 km northeast of Barcelona and 15 km from Figueres. It is built around one of Europe's largest residential canal networks, so the water is the point: rent a boat, walk the canal bridges, use the beach, and drive out to Figueres, Cadaqués or the Aiguamolls wetlands. Summer population swells to roughly 80,000 and drops to a few thousand in winter, so the town is a seasonal machine. Two nights covers it; three if you add a skydive or a full day on the water.

Get around
The town is spread over canals and long avenues, so walking is fine inside one area but slow between them. Bikes are the best local transport; hire one for the day. Local buses link the centre, the beaches and Castelló d'Empúries, and there is a bus to Figueres. A car helps for day trips; parking near the beach fills by mid-morning in August.
