Emerald Isle
Go for 3–5 nights if you want a slow beach town with a car; skip it as a day trip — the sand is the point, not the sights.
Emerald Isle is a family beach town on Bogue Banks, the barrier island of North Carolina's Crystal Coast. Almost all beds are weekly beach houses and condos, so it suits a 3–5 night stay with a car rather than a sightseeing stop. Expect warm water from May to October, a 26-mile island road, and no public transport.

Get around
A car is effectively required: there is no public transport on the island, only local taxi companies. NC-58 runs the length of Bogue Banks; the 26-mile drive can take up to 45 min because the limit swings between 35 and 45 mph. Bike paths run along Emerald Drive and Coast Guard Road, and Ocean Drive is a slow 25 mph back road good for walking and cycling.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Handshake and 'hi, how are you?' — reply 'good, thanks'; avoid: Treating the question as a real health enquiry
- Restaurants: Tip 18–22% and wait for the check; avoid: Leaving without tipping
- Personal space: Keep an arm's length in queues; avoid: Standing close to strangers
- Politics and religion: Listen more than you speak; avoid: Opening with hot-button topics
- Smoking: Smoke only in marked areas; avoid: Smoking near doors or in parks where banned
Scams and watch-outs
- The Point, at the west end, has dangerously strong currents — do not swim there.
- Most rentals are weekly in peak season and many agencies will not rent to student groups or unaccompanied young groups.
- Hurricane season runs Aug–Oct: check forecasts and rental cancellation terms before booking.
- The island cinema takes cash at the door; buy online with a card if you would rather not carry cash.
A low-crime family beach town; the real risks are rip currents, sun and storms. Swim near lifeguarded access points, never at the Point, and keep an eye on the hurricane forecast Aug–Oct.
