Ellsworth, Maine
Ellsworth
Use Ellsworth as a 1-night supply base for Acadia, not a sightseeing stop: groceries, gas and cheaper beds 30 min from Bar Harbor.
Ellsworth is the county seat of Hancock County and the practical gateway to Acadia National Park and Mount Desert Island, about 30 minutes from Bar Harbor. It has the region's biggest supermarket and shopping strip, a compact downtown on the Union River, and motels that cost less than Bar Harbor in July and August. Most travellers pass through; a night here works if you want cheap beds, a full grocery run and an early park start.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Handshake and 'hi, how are you?' — reply 'good, thanks'; avoid: Treating the question as a real health enquiry
- Restaurants: Tip 18–22% and wait for the check; avoid: Leaving without tipping
- Personal space: Keep an arm's length in queues; avoid: Standing close to strangers
- Politics and religion: Listen more than you speak; avoid: Opening with hot-button topics
- Smoking: Smoke only in marked areas; avoid: Smoking near doors or in parks where banned
Scams and watch-outs
- Summer traffic backs up at the Route 1/Route 3 junction known as 'The Triangle' — add 15–20 min at peak times.
- Many seasonal restaurants, museums and motels close from late October to May; check before you book.
- Woodlawn Museum is generally open May–September only; confirm dates and hours before going.
- Cell coverage is fine in town but patchy on back roads toward the park; download offline maps.
Ellsworth is a low-crime small city; the real risks are summer road traffic, black ice in winter and wildlife on rural roads at dusk. Standard US precautions apply.
