Elgin
Give Elgin one night as a Moray base: cathedral and museum in half a day, then coast or Speyside distilleries by car.
Elgin is the county town of Moray and the practical base for northeast Scotland between Inverness and Aberdeen. The ruined cathedral, a small museum and a walkable High Street fill half a day; the rest of the trip is the coast at Lossiemouth and the whisky distilleries inland. A car turns one night into three.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Handshake at first meeting; 'hi' and first names quickly; avoid: Cheek kisses with strangers
- Conversation: Weather is a safe opener; understatement and self-deprecating humour; avoid: Asking about salary or class
- Queues: Join at the back; avoid: Pushing onto buses or trains before others get off
- Apologies: 'Sorry' is said constantly, even when not at fault; avoid: Taking it as an admission of blame
- Pubs: Buy rounds in a group; wait at the bar without waving money; avoid: Clicking fingers at staff
- Nations: Call Scots Scottish and Welsh Welsh; avoid: Calling the whole UK 'England'
Scams and watch-outs
- Elgin Museum is closed while the building is made safe: check before you plan around it.
- Many distilleries and smaller sites shut in winter or run reduced hours: check each one.
- The A96 runs through town with no bypass; expect slow traffic at peak times.
- Book Speyside distillery tours ahead in summer; walk-in slots are limited.
Elgin is a small, low-crime town and safe to walk by day and early evening. The real risks are rural roads after dark, winter ice on pavements and Friday or Saturday night crowds around the High Street bars.
