El Oro de Hidalgo
Go for one night, or as a half-day stop between Toluca and Tlalpujahua: the mines, theatre and plaza fill 4–5 hours, not two days.
El Oro de Hidalgo is a small Pueblo Mágico in northwestern Mexico State, about 3 hours by car from Mexico City and roughly 1.5–2 hours from Toluca. It grew on gold mining from the 17th century and its compact centre holds a neoclassical theatre, a parish church, two mine visits and a mining museum, all within a 10-minute walk. Most travellers see it as a stop on a highlands loop with Tlalpujahua, or as a quiet one-night break with lake and pine-forest walks nearby.
