El Morro
Skip El Morro as a base. Stop for 1–2 hours to see the Inscription Trail at El Morro National Monument, then continue to Grants or Gallup for the night.
El Morro is a tiny town (population 30) in northwest New Mexico, best known for El Morro National Monument — a sandstone bluff carved with centuries of inscriptions by Ancestral Puebloans, Spanish explorers and American settlers. The monument is the only reason to stop. You can see the main trail in about an hour. There is no lodging, dining or fuel in town; the nearest services are in Ramah (15 min) or Grants (45 min). Most travellers visit as a short detour on the way to or from the Zuni Pueblo, Chaco Culture National Historical Park or the Acoma Pueblo.
