El Fuerte

El Fuerte is a small colonial town of about 13,000 people in northern Sinaloa, named a Pueblo Mágico in 2010 and used as the lowland gateway to Copper Canyon. The centre is walkable in an hour; the reason to stop is the Chepe railway, the 1610 fort, the Río Fuerte valley and the petroglyphs at Cerro de la Máscara. One night covers the town, two let you add the train or the river.

The centre is flat and walkable; most sights are within 15 minutes on foot. Taxis cover the train station (5–10 min) and the airport road. No useful local bus network for visitors. Check taxi fares before you get in.
