El Cuco
Go for 2–3 nights if you surf or want a quiet dark-sand beach; skip it if you need nightlife, walkable town or reliable buses.
El Cuco is a low-rise beach village on El Salvador's eastern Pacific coast, known to surfers as Oriente Salvaje. The sand is volcanic grey-to-black, the water is warm, and the strip is a line of palapa restaurants and small hotels rather than a resort town. Two or three nights covers the beach, the surf at Playa Las Flores and a volcano or mangrove side trip. It suits surfers, couples and slow travellers; it does not suit anyone wanting bars, shops or a car-free base.

Get around
Public transport inside the beach strip is limited (check): most people walk the sand or take local taxis and hotel shuttles between El Cuco, Las Flores, El Esteron and Intipuca. Buses to San Miguel leave from the village and take about 90 minutes. A car helps for volcano, mangrove and lake trips.

Scams and watch-outs
- Many beach restaurants close on rotating days by local agreement: expect some palapas shut and check before you walk far.
- Sand gets very hot in the afternoon; wear sandals on the beach.
- Surf at Las Flores is for experienced surfers at times: ask locally about currents and rocks.
- Cash is king outside the bigger hotels: carry small US dollar notes, as change is limited.
- Roads to some cliff-top hotels are rocky dirt tracks; a low car may struggle after rain.
El Cuco is a small beach community and generally calm, but it is remote: use hotel shuttles or taxis after dark, keep to the beach strip, and don't leave valuables on the sand while you swim.
