El Centro
Give El Centro one night as an I-8 stopover or a winter snowbird base; skip it in July–August, when highs pass 45°C.
El Centro is the largest US city entirely below sea level and the seat of Imperial County, ringed by irrigated fields that grow much of the country's winter lettuce and carrots. It is a working agricultural town, not a resort: most visitors pass through on Interstate 8, sleep one night, and use it as a launch point for the Algodones Dunes, the border towns of Calexico and Mexicali, or the Salton Sea. Winter is the season that works.

Get around
A car is effectively required: sights and the dunes are spread across the valley and summer walking is unsafe. Imperial Valley Transit runs local shuttles and routes to Brawley, Holtville and Seeley, but waits of up to two hours are common and stops can be far from your destination — carry exact change or a punch card. Taxis are cheap for short hops in town.
