El Castillo is a one-street river village on the San Juan, built around a 1670s Spanish fort that once stopped pirates and Horatio Nelson. There are no cars, no ATM and no road in: you arrive by boat from San Carlos, walk everywhere, and use the village as a base for Indio Maíz rainforest and river rapids. Two nights covers the fort, a jungle or kayak day and the boat back.

Get around
On foot only — the village has no cars and no rental bikes. Kayaks can be rented for river trips, with or without a guide. Boats along the San Juan are the only way in and out.
