Egypt in October: what to expect

October is the month Egypt's travel year turns. The summer heat breaks in the north first: Cairo and the Delta move from hot to pleasant, with long clear days and cool evenings. The Mediterranean coast — Alexandria, El Alamein — is at its most usable, warm sea, mild air, and only the odd early shower.

Upper Egypt is the lag. Luxor and Aswan still run hot through the middle of the day, and the sun on open temple floors is punishing between about 11am and 3pm. The workable pattern is a dawn start, a long lunch and pool break, then a second visit in the late afternoon. By the end of the month the valley has cooled noticeably and full-day sightseeing becomes comfortable again.

The Red Sea and South Sinai are the standout: warm air, calm water, and the clearest diving conditions of the year. Desert nights in Siwa and the White Desert are already cold after dark.

October sits in the middle of the scale: medium crowds and medium prices. Hotel rates in Cairo and on the Red Sea are moderate, Nile cruises are restarting and cabins are generally available, and the Giza plateau and Luxor's temples are busy but not packed.

The one concentration is the Abu Simbel sun festival on 22 October, when a large crowd gathers at a single site on a single morning. Elsewhere in the country the month behaves like a shoulder-season month throughout.

Practical effect: October gives a good weather-to-price ratio, and bookings are easier than in November or December. If you are coming for the festival or a specific cruise departure, reserve those pieces ahead.

The Abu Simbel sun festival on 22 October is the month's fixed point. Twice a year — 22 February and 22 October — dawn light reaches the inner sanctuary of Ramesses II's temple. It is a genuine spectacle but a crowded one: the site is packed, so book early.

Beyond that, October is a quiet month for public holidays. Ramadan and the Eid holidays fall in February and March in 2027, so no fasting hours or Eid travel surges apply. Coptic and national holidays cluster in January. Check local listings closer to your dates for Cairo opera, gallery and festival programming, which is announced seasonally.

Cairo and Giza are at their best: the pyramids, the Grand Egyptian Museum and Islamic Cairo are all comfortable in the morning, and the city is pleasant after dark. Give Cairo three nights as a first-timer.

Luxor and Aswan work if you respect the heat: Valley of the Kings and Karnak at opening time, felucca and Nile views in the afternoon, Luxor Temple lit up in the evening. Nile cruises between Luxor and Aswan restart in full this month — a strong October choice.

The Red Sea is the month's easiest win. Hurghada, Sharm el-Sheikh and Dahab are all rated best for conditions in October; El Gouna suits families and kitesurfers. Alexandria and the north coast are ideal for a two-night add-on from Cairo.

Skip the deep Western Desert oases unless you are set up for cold nights, and treat Siwa as a shoulder-season trip rather than a peak one.

Pack for two climates. In Cairo and on the coast you need light layers for warm days and cool evenings. In Luxor and Aswan you need serious sun protection: hat, sunglasses, high-factor sunscreen, a refillable water bottle and loose long sleeves that cover more than a t-shirt does.

Add a light jacket or fleece for desert nights and for the dawn Abu Simbel run, where it can be genuinely cold before sunrise. Modest clothing helps at mosques and in rural areas; a scarf is useful for dust and sun. Reef-safe sunscreen and a rash guard if you are diving or snorkelling.

September is still hot in the valley and cheaper, with good diving and rising prices late in the month. November is one of the best all-round months — warm, clear, but high season and high prices. December is peak: ideal weather, the year's highest rates, and Christmas–New Year demand on the Red Sea and Nile cruises.

If your dates are flexible and you want the sweet spot, aim for October or the first half of November.
