Egypt in April: what to expect

April is the last comfortable month for the Nile Valley before summer. Cairo and the Delta run mild to warm, Alexandria is at its best, and the Red Sea is warm in the air and easy in the water. Upper Egypt is the one place to watch: Luxor and Aswan are still fine in the first half of the month, but by the last week afternoon temperatures push toward 38 °C and shade becomes the main planning tool.

Spring also brings khamsin winds. These are hot, dusty southerly blows that arrive some days between March and May, cut visibility, and can briefly shut desert roads or delay flights. They rarely last more than a day or two. If one hits, move a museum or a Nile-side afternoon into the slot and keep the outdoor ruins for the next morning.

April sits in the middle band. The European winter charter season has ended, so Red Sea resorts are quieter and hotel rates drop from their January–February highs, but the two weeks around Western Easter and the Egyptian spring holiday keep Cairo, Luxor and the coast busy for a stretch. Book Nile cruises and Abu Simbel seats a few weeks ahead if your dates fall in that window.

Domestic travel spikes on Sham el-Nessim, the spring picnic Monday after Coptic Easter (April or early May, moves each year — check). On that day parks, Nile banks and the Alexandria road fill with Egyptian families. It is a good day to be in a museum or on a boat rather than driving between cities.

The fixed date to know is Sham el-Nessim, a national spring holiday with Coptic roots, dated by Coptic Easter and so moving between April and early May. Expect packed parks, salted fish picnics and heavy traffic on the coast roads.

Western Easter and the school holidays that follow bring a short booking surge in Cairo, Luxor and the Red Sea. Ramadan and Eid al-Fitr fall in February–March in 2027, so April is normally clear of them (lunar dates — check). The Abu Simbel sun festivals are in February and October, not April.

Cairo and Giza are close to ideal: warm, dry, and long enough days to pair the pyramids with the Grand Egyptian Museum and Islamic Cairo. Alexandria is at its most usable, with sea breezes and mild afternoons, and it makes an easy two-night add-on by train from Cairo.

For the Nile Valley, front-load the trip. Do Luxor and Aswan in the first half of April, start at opening time, and keep the middle of the day for tombs, temples with cover, or the hotel pool. A Nile cruise still works well early in the month. The Red Sea and South Sinai are the safest bet all month: Hurghada, El Gouna, Sharm el-Sheikh and Dahab all have warm water and comfortable air. The Western Desert oases are getting hot by day but still fine for a night or two, with cold nights gone.

Pack for heat with a cool morning layer. Linen and light cotton, a wide-brimmed hat, sunglasses, high-factor sunscreen and a refillable water bottle cover most of the trip. Add a light scarf for dust days and for covering shoulders and hair at mosques. Comfortable closed shoes matter more than sandals at archaeological sites, where ground is uneven and hot.

For the Nile Valley, a small day bag with water, oral rehydration sachets and a sun hood makes dawn starts much easier. A light long-sleeve shirt beats sunscreen on the hottest afternoons. If you are diving, most Red Sea operators rent gear, so you can travel light.

March is cooler and greener, with khamsin dust already possible and Ramadan or Eid sometimes in play. May tips into caution: Luxor reaches 40 °C and temple visits move to dawn only, though the Red Sea stays excellent. February is peak Nile season with the best temple weather and the Abu Simbel sun festival on 22 February.
