Details, step by step
Book the shape of the trip before the hotels. Egypt rewards a simple line: Cairo first, the Nile Valley second, the Red Sea last. Cairo is the arrival hub and holds the Giza pyramids, the Grand Egyptian Museum and Islamic Cairo — three nights is the standard first block. Then fly or take the sleeper train south to Luxor, and either cruise to Aswan or use Luxor and Aswan as two land bases with a car and driver between them. Abu Simbel is a half-day or an overnight from Aswan, not a separate stop.
Do the outdoor sites early. The pyramids and the West Bank tombs at Luxor are best at opening, when the light is low and the coaches have not arrived. Save the Grand Egyptian Museum and the Egyptian Museum for the hot middle of the day, when air-conditioning is the point. Luxor Temple is worth a second visit after dark.
Decide on the Red Sea separately. Hurghada and Marsa Alam are resort-and-reef blocks with their own flights; Dahab and Sharm el-Sheikh sit in Sinai and work best as a second trip or a long add-on. Do not try to bolt a Red Sea resort onto a four-day Nile stop — the transfers eat the days.

Tips that change the trip
Money and manners do most of the work. Carry Egyptian pounds in small notes: tips for guides, drivers, hotel staff and toilet attendants are normal and small. Agree any price before the service — carriage rides at the pyramids, taxis, felucca sails, photos with anyone in costume. If a stranger offers to show you something for free, it is not free.
Heat and Ramadan shape the day. From June to August, Upper Egypt is punishing; if you must travel then, do sites at dawn, rest at midday and keep the valley short. During Ramadan, opening hours shift and some restaurants close in daylight — plan meals around it.
