For a first trip, base in Siwa for two to three nights, add a night in El Alamein on the Mediterranean, and treat Aswan's Nubian villages and the Kharga Oasis as add-ons to a Nile itinerary. We ranked places that are small enough to walk in a morning, have at least one reason to stay overnight, and can be reached without a private tour. Weighting: distinct experience (40%), ease of access (30%), value for two nights (20%), and how well the place works outside peak season (10%).

We left out sites that are day trips rather than towns, and resort strips that are large enough to have their own city pages. Where a transfer time or fare could not be confirmed, we marked it check.

When to go

October to April is the comfortable window for the Nile Valley, Cairo and the western deserts. Siwa is best October to March; summer there is extreme. The Mediterranean coast, including El Alamein, is a spring-to-autumn destination, and the Red Sea towns run March to November.

Ramadan shifts each year and changes opening hours and transport schedules in small towns more than in cities. Check dates before you book a desert or oasis leg.

Getting there

Cairo is the hub. Most travellers fly into Cairo International Airport (CAI), spend three nights in Cairo and Giza, then fly or take the sleeper train south to Luxor or Aswan. Small towns sit at the ends of those routes rather than on them.

Siwa is the long one: a road transfer from Cairo or Alexandria, usually a full day each way, so it needs two nights minimum to be worth it. Kharga is a road trip from Luxor or Cairo. El Alamein is on the Alexandria road and can be a stop between the two. El Gouna and Port Ghalib are short road transfers from Hurghada and Marsa Alam. Port Said is reachable by road or rail from Cairo.
