Overview

Seven days in Egypt works when you accept that the country is two trips in one: the Cairo region and the Nile Valley. Trying to add the Red Sea or Alexandria to a week means spending your last days in transit rather than at temples.

The route below is the one the country page recommends for a first trip, compressed. Three nights in Cairo covers Giza, the Grand Egyptian Museum and a half day in Islamic Cairo. Two nights in Luxor covers Karnak, Luxor Temple and the West Bank. Two nights in Aswan covers Philae and a felucca afternoon. You fly Cairo → Luxor and Aswan → Cairo, which keeps the long legs short.

This is a fast trip. If you want a Nile cruise, a rest day or Abu Simbel without a 04:00 start, take 10 days instead.

The shape is a simple out-and-back: Cairo is the hub, Luxor and Aswan sit about 200 km apart on the Nile, and you return to Cairo for the flight home. Everything else in Egypt is a detour from this line.

Book the Cairo → Luxor flight or sleeper train before you arrive; both sell out in high season.
Keep the last night in Cairo, not Aswan, so a delay cannot cost you the international flight.

Day by day

Mornings matter in Egypt. Sites open early and the heat builds from about 11:00, so put the outdoor stops first and the museums or the hotel pool in the afternoon.

Abu Simbel needs a 04:00 departure from Aswan by road or a short flight; on 7 days it usually costs you Philae or the felucca.
Saqqara and Dahshur are a half day from Cairo and fit day 3 only if you skip Coptic Cairo.

Day 7 assumes an evening or next-day international departure; if your flight leaves early, move the Aswan → Cairo leg to day 6 evening (check).

Where to stay

Three bases, two hotel changes in seven days. In Cairo, staying downtown or in Zamalek puts you near the Egyptian Museum and restaurants; staying in Giza puts you near the pyramids but adds 30–60 minutes to everything else. Pick one and stay put.

In Luxor, the East Bank near Luxor Temple is the practical base for Karnak and the ferry to the West Bank. In Aswan, the corniche or Elephantine Island keeps Philae trips and feluccas close. Book the first and last nights in Cairo first, then fill the middle.

Egypt is cheap by US or UK standards, but flights, entry tickets and guides add up. The band below is per person for a mid-range trip: 3- and 4-star hotels or good guesthouses, one or two guided days, and internal flights. Variations

Swap Aswan for a Nile cruise. A 3-night Luxor → Aswan cruise covers Edfu and Kom Ombo without the road, but it eats the days you would spend in Aswan. That is the 10-day route.

Add the Red Sea instead of Aswan. Fly or drive Luxor → Hurghada (about 4 h by road) and finish with 2 nights of diving or beach. You lose Philae and the felucca.

Add Alexandria. One night from Cairo by train is possible, but on 7 days it means cutting Cairo to 2 nights, which is tight for Giza plus the Grand Egyptian Museum.

If you have more time, 10 days adds a cruise and 14 days adds the Red Sea without cutting the Nile Valley.
