Edmundston
Stay one night as a Trans-Canada Highway stop, or two if you want the botanical garden, the blockhouse and a Mont Farlagne day. Skip as a destination on its own.
Edmundston is a small francophone city of about 17,000 on the Saint John River, right against the Maine border. Almost everyone speaks French first. It is a practical overnight on Route 2 between Fredericton and Quebec, with a botanical garden, a rebuilt 1841 blockhouse and a ski hill that justify a second night in summer or winter.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Handshake; 'Bonjour' first in Québec; avoid: Assuming everyone speaks English
- Queues: Line up and wait your turn; avoid: Pushing in
- Apologising: 'Sorry' is politeness, not admission of fault; avoid: Loud confrontation
- Canada vs US: Treat Canada as its own country; avoid: Calling Canadians American
- Indigenous culture: Buy from Indigenous-owned businesses and ask before photos at ceremonies; avoid: Wearing headdresses as costume
Scams and watch-outs
- French is the default language; start in French and most people will switch for you.
- Winter driving: snow tires and a scraper are not optional from November to April.
- The border bridge to Madawaska, Maine is open 24 hours; carry your passport if you cross.
- Many small sights close from Labour Day to late June; check before you drive out.
A quiet, safe small city; the real risks are winter ice on pavements and steps, moose on Route 2 after dark, and cold that bites below −20 °C (−4 °F). 911 works everywhere.A quiet, safe small city; the real risks are winter ice on pavements and steps, moose on Route 2 after dark, and cold that bites below −4 °F (−20 °C). 911 works everywhere.
