The detail

South Queensferry sits under the Forth bridges and is the easiest trip out of the city: train to Dalmeny, then a short walk down to the water. Go at low tide or late afternoon for the light, and pair it with a walk along the shore. North Berwick is a small seaside town with a beach, a harbour and a seabird centre; the train runs from Waverley and the walk from the station takes minutes.

Stirling is the history day: a castle on a crag, the Wallace Monument on the hill opposite, and a compact old town. Glasgow is the city day: museums, Victorian streets and the best eating outside Edinburgh. Both are quick by train and need no car.

The Scottish Borders and Fife are car days. In the Borders, Melrose and Jedburgh abbeys and the hills around them reward a loop; in Fife, the coast villages of the East Neuk and St Andrews fill a full day. Without a car, reach St Andrews by bus or train plus bus, and expect longer travel.

The Highlands are the long day. A coach tour to Loch Ness, Glencoe or the Trossachs runs roughly 12 hours door to door and is the only realistic way to see them without a car in a day. If you have the time, an overnight in the Highlands or on Skye is far better than the round trip.
