Edgewood
Edgewood, New Mexico
Skip as a base unless you want a cheap I-40 bed east of Albuquerque: 1 night, or a 2–3 h stop for Wildlife West Nature Park.
Edgewood is a small town on Interstate 40 about 20 miles east of Albuquerque, on the far side of the Sandia Mountains. It is a service stop for the East Mountain corridor — gas, food, a wildlife park and a shooting range — not a sightseeing destination. Most travellers pass through in an hour or sleep one night on the way to or from Santa Fe and Albuquerque.

The North Central Regional Transit District runs free Blue Buses on weekdays linking Edgewood and Moriarty with Santa Fe via Stanley and Galisteo — useful only if you are car-free and heading north. Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Handshake and 'hi, how are you?' — reply 'good, thanks'; avoid: Treating the question as a real health enquiry
- Restaurants: Tip 18–22% and wait for the check; avoid: Leaving without tipping
- Personal space: Keep an arm's length in queues; avoid: Standing close to strangers
- Politics and religion: Listen more than you speak; avoid: Opening with hot-button topics
- Smoking: Smoke only in marked areas; avoid: Smoking near doors or in parks where banned
Scams and watch-outs
- No walkable town centre: distances between food, fuel and lodging are 2–5 km along frontage roads.
- Summer monsoon: sudden afternoon thunderstorms and flash flooding on I-40 and side roads, Jul–Aug.
- Winter ice and blowing snow can close I-40 east of Albuquerque; check road conditions before driving.
- Cell coverage is patchy in the hills off the interstate.
Edgewood is a low-crime small town; the real risks are driving — monsoon storms, winter ice on I-40 and long unlit frontage roads at night. Keep fuel above a quarter tank and carry water.
