Edgewater
Edgewater, Florida
Skip Edgewater as a base: it is a residential town on the Intracoastal with no beach of its own. Sleep in New Smyrna Beach, 10 min north, and drive down for kayaking.
Edgewater is a residential town of about 20,750 people on the mainland side of the Intracoastal Waterway in southeast Volusia County, joined to New Smyrna Beach with no visible boundary. It has a kayak launch, a riverside park, a rail-trail trailhead and a handful of US-1 businesses. Almost all beds, restaurants and beach access sit in New Smyrna Beach, so most travellers use Edgewater for a half-day on the water and sleep elsewhere.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Handshake and 'hi, how are you?' — reply 'good, thanks'; avoid: Treating the question as a real health enquiry
- Restaurants: Tip 18–22% and wait for the check; avoid: Leaving without tipping
- Personal space: Keep an arm's length in queues; avoid: Standing close to strangers
- Politics and religion: Listen more than you speak; avoid: Opening with hot-button topics
- Smoking: Smoke only in marked areas; avoid: Smoking near doors or in parks where banned
Scams and watch-outs
- No beach in Edgewater: the ocean is across the waterway, reached via the South Causeway from New Smyrna Beach.
- There is no bridge from the barrier island to Edgewater at this point; the waterway and wetlands are too wide.
- The A1A/US-1 junction in New Smyrna Beach is incomplete, so use a surface street to switch between them.
- Paddling trails wind through marsh and swamp with few landmarks: carry a charged phone with GPS.
- Summer afternoons bring lightning storms; be off the water by early afternoon in Jun–Sep.
- US-1 south toward Oak Hill is rural with higher speed limits and long gaps between services.
A quiet residential town; the real risks are summer heat and lightning on the water, fast traffic on US-1 and I-95, and rip currents if you swim at New Smyrna Beach. Standard US precautions apply.
