Edale
Go for 1–2 nights if you want Kinder Scout or the start of the Pennine Way; skip as a base if you have no car and no hill plan.
Edale is a small village in the valley of the River Noe, inside the Peak District National Park and about 35–45 minutes by train from Sheffield or Manchester. It is the southern start of the Pennine Way and the usual launch point for Kinder Scout. There is one station, two pubs, two cafés, a campsite and a youth hostel; everything else is walking. One night covers a day walk, two nights lets you add Castleton or Hayfield.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Handshake at first meeting; 'hi' and first names quickly; avoid: Cheek kisses with strangers
- Conversation: Weather is a safe opener; understatement and self-deprecating humour; avoid: Asking about salary or class
- Queues: Join at the back; avoid: Pushing onto buses or trains before others get off
- Apologies: 'Sorry' is said constantly, even when not at fault; avoid: Taking it as an admission of blame
- Pubs: Buy rounds in a group; wait at the bar without waving money; avoid: Clicking fingers at staff
- Nations: Call Scots Scottish and Welsh Welsh; avoid: Calling the whole UK 'England'
Scams and watch-outs
- No bus along the valley: plan walks as loops back to the station or time the hourly train.
- Mobile signal is patchy: basic coverage from Three and Vodafone, 4G from EE, no O2 signal; 5G has not reached the area.
- Kinder Scout plateau is peat bog with few landmarks: carry a paper map (OS Outdoor Leisure 1) and a compass, and turn back in fog.
- Beds and campsite pitches fill on school holidays and sunny weekends: book ahead.
- Pub kitchens stop serving in the early evening: check last orders before a late walk.
Edale is a quiet village and the main risks are on the hills: peat bog, fast weather changes, no mobile signal in places and short winter daylight. Tell someone your route, carry a map and compass, and call 999 for mountain rescue.
