Ecatepec
San Cristóbal Ecatepec
Skip as a base: use Ecatepec only to reach Felipe Ángeles airport (NLU) or Teotihuacán, and sleep in Mexico City instead.
Ecatepec is a 1.6-million-person suburb on the north edge of Mexico City, in Mexico State rather than CDMX. It has three Metro Line B stations, two Mexibús lines and the Tren Suburbano, plus the closest beds to Felipe Ángeles airport (NLU). Sights are thin: a regional museum, a modern cathedral and a state park. Most travellers pass through, or use it for one airport night.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Handshake; a kiss on the right cheek among friends; avoid: Skipping 'buenos días' when entering a shop
- Punctuality: Be on time for tours and buses; avoid: Expecting social events to start on time
- Talking: Warm small talk, family, food, football; avoid: Jokes about cartels, the wall or migration
- Churches: Covered shoulders, quiet; avoid: Photos during mass
- Dining: Say 'provecho' to other diners when leaving; avoid: Rushing the waiter
Scams and watch-outs
- Parts of the municipality have high crime rates; avoid walking alone at night and keep phones out of sight.
- Many hotels are short-stay (love hotels) that quote 4–6 h rates and charge roughly double for a full night: confirm the overnight price before paying.
- Public markets other than San Cristóbal are not set up for visitors.
- Traffic on MEX-57 and MEX-85 is heavy at rush hour; add buffer time for airport runs.
Ecatepec has a high crime rate in parts of the municipality. Stay in lit, busy areas, use taxis or ride-hailing after dark, and treat it as a transport stop rather than a place to wander.
