Eastsound

Base in Eastsound for 2 nights: it is the island's services hub, 15 min from the ferry road and 20 min from Moran State Park's lakes.

Eastsound is the commercial centre of Orcas Island, the largest of Washington's San Juan Islands, sitting at the head of the inlet also called East Sound. It is a small village of galleries, a bookstore, a bakery and a grocery store, with the island's main visitor services on North Beach Road and Main Street. Travellers use it as a base for Moran State Park, Mount Constitution and the rural east half of the island — Doe Bay, Olga and Rosario. Most visits run 2–3 nights, and a car or bike matters more here than in a walkable city.

Get around

A car is the practical choice: Orcas Road runs about 8 mi (13 km) from the Orcas Village ferry terminal into Eastsound, and Moran State Park is a further drive south on Olga Road. Orcas Island Rental Car delivers a midsize from about $65 a day, and OrcaShuttle runs in spring and summer. Bicycles are a good fit for the quiet roads — bring your own on the ferry or rent from Wildlife Cycles on North Beach Road. A Discover Pass is required to park at Moran State Park and most Washington state parks: $10 for one day or $30 for a year, linked to your licence plate.
