Rules in force · 6Guatemala, El Salvador, Honduras and Nicaragua (CA-4) giv…
- Central America ↗Guatemala, El Salvador, Honduras and Nicaragua (CA-4) give one shared entry allowance, usually 90 days in total; leaving for Belize, Costa Rica or Mexico and coming back does not always reset it — check with immigration before a long stay.
- Central America ↗Cross land borders in daylight and early in the day; many posts close or empty of transport by late afternoon, and the approaches are where robberies happen.
- Central America ↗Several borders charge entry, exit or municipal fees in US dollars (Belize exit, Nicaragua entry and exit, Honduras entry); carry small, clean US notes and ask for a receipt.
- Panama ↗Check entry rules for your passport with Panama's National Migration Service or a Panamanian consulate; proof of onward travel and funds may be asked for.
- Panama ↗Do not travel independently in the Darién; the UK and other governments warn against parts of it, and there is no road crossing to Colombia.
- Panama ↗Guna Yala (San Blas) is governed by the Guna people: visitor fees apply, and photography of people usually needs permission and payment. Book through Guna-run or licensed operators.
Eastern Panama is two different places. The Caribbean coast of Guna Yala (San Blas) is a run of 365 islands with Guna-run lodging and boat transfers, reached by 4x4 from Panama City or by short flight. Inland Darién is roadless rainforest past Yaviza, where the Pan-American Highway stops; it is visited only with a licensed guide and never crossed on foot. Most travellers do San Blas for 2–3 nights and leave the interior alone.

- The Darién Gap has no road and is a known route for drug trafficking and armed groups; crossing on foot is not a tourist activity.
- San Blas has no ATMs and little phone signal; bring cash in small US notes for the entry fee, boats and drinks.
- Boat crossings to the islands are open-water and can be rough in the windy season; seasickness is common.
Day-trips door to door

|---|---|---|---|---|
| Mulatupo o Sasardí | San Blas islands | min | unknown | Boat time varies with sea state; arrange the return with your lodge, not on the day. |
| Darién National Park | Panama City | min | unknown | Access and trip length: check. Long road leg plus river boat; guided trips only. |
Bags between cities
There is no luggage forwarding into Guna Yala. Pack in a dry bag and leave hard cases in Panama City; boats and 4x4s take soft bags only.

Eastern Panama is wetter than the Pacific side of the country; plan boat and flight days with a spare day in hand.
