Eastern Massachusetts is Boston plus five counties of coast, mill towns and suburbs, home to about 4.5 million people. The MBTA commuter rail reaches Salem, Lowell, Plymouth and Providence, so a car-free trip works if you sleep in Boston and day-trip out. A car only pays off for the North Shore beaches, the South Shore and the mill-town bike trails.

Ocean keeps spring cool; September and early October are the steadiest dry spells. Nor'easters can drop heavy snow Dec–Mar.
Inland suburbs and mill towns
A few degrees colder than the coast in winter and warmer in July; leaf colour peaks early to mid-October.

Best months are also the busiest: Salem in October and the coast in July–August fill beds and raise room rates.
